Loopt, Privacy and GPS in the US

According to this article on how GPS can help us, but has many privacy issues, “almost 55 percent of all mobile phones sold today in the United States have the technology that makes such friend-and- family-tracking services possible, according to Current Analysis, which follows trends in technology”. I don’t really believe it - I’ll try and get proper figures from the source itself.

The article mentions the Loopt service, which I think I’ve mentioned in this blog before. It’s a service based in the US that lets people find where their opted-in friends are located. Locating yourself can be achieved using a variety of means, such as the Loopt plugin for your web browser, or directly from your Loopt-enabled mobile phone (this may or may not use GPS).
