People-to-people VIA People
I noticed this in the shower today (on communication mediums):
- Phone/letters/IM: person-to-person
- Email/group messaging: person-to-person/people-to-people
- Social web: people-to-people via people
The truth is, people are increasingly observing the communication between people rather than accessing personally-directed messages. This is becoming an important communication medium on its own where, to an extent, spying becomes socially accepted. The direction of links created for these messages become part of the message itself. To illustrate this in your mind, ponder this: what would the value be of a social messaging system, like Facebook, if we don’t explicitly make the message senders and recipients visible? What can we imagine a messaging system to be like if we stripped away the personal, leaving only the social? Is this silly, or could we learn from this?
I’ll probably update when I next shower.
